Privacy policy
Last updated
Cooklog is a recipe app that is still being built. Until it opens, this website does two things: it explains Cooklog, and it lets you join a waitlist. This policy covers both. When the app opens, this policy will be updated to cover accounts and recipes before anyone can sign up.
Cooklog is run by Oliver Burke, in the United Kingdom, who is the controller of the personal data described here. You can reach us at the address under Contact.
Visiting this website
This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics or tracking scripts.
- Hosting. The site is served by Amazon Web Services (AWS) through its CloudFront network. To deliver a page, AWS necessarily handles your IP address and the details your browser sends with each request. We don’t switch on request logging, so we don’t keep records that identify you. AWS gives us aggregate reports, such as which pages are popular, which sites send visitors, and visitors’ countries and device types.
- Your theme choice. If you use the light or dark theme switch, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage so the site remembers it. It stays on your device and is never sent to us. Clear your browser’s site data to remove it.
The waitlist
If you join the waitlist, we collect your email address so we can tell you when Cooklog opens and send occasional news about it.
- Who handles it. The list is held by EmailOctopus, a UK company that sends our emails. It stores data in the European Union (Ireland), which UK law treats as giving adequate protection. EmailOctopus also records when you signed up and confirmed, which is how we show that you agreed.
- Our reason. Your consent. We send a confirmation email first, and you’re only on the list once you’ve confirmed.
- Leaving. Every email has an unsubscribe link, or you can email us to be removed. Unsubscribing withdraws your consent and we stop emailing you.
- How long we keep it. Until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, or until we stop sending news about Cooklog, whichever comes first.
- Nothing else. We don’t sell your address, share it with anyone except EmailOctopus to send these emails, or use it for advertising.
What we promise about the app
The app isn’t open yet, but these are commitments, and the policy that covers accounts will hold them:
- Your recipes will be stored in London (AWS’s
eu-west-2region). - We won’t train AI models on the recipes, notes or anything else you write.
- Closing your account will delete everything in it.
- You’ll be able to export every recipe and version yourself, without asking us.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it or delete it, object to how we use it, and withdraw your consent at any time. Email us at the address below and we’ll reply within a month.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK’s data protection regulator. We’d appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects how we use your email address, we’ll tell you by email before it takes effect.
